Best Gel Polish Brands Compared: OPI, DND, Kiara Sky, Apres and Pink Mask
OPI, DND, Kiara Sky, Apres and Pink Mask compared on system, lamps, shade range and HEMA and TPO free options, using what we actually stock.

No gel brand wins every category, so match the brand to your work. OPI offers a full system and large shade range, DND adds gel and lacquer duos and a HEMA and TPO free line, Kiara Sky is strong for effects, Apres for Gel-X, and Pink Mask for a whole set from one brand.
There is no single best gel brand, but there is a best fit
OPI, DND, Kiara Sky, Apres and Pink Mask all make gel that works when it is applied thin and cured under a lamp the brand supports. What changes is the shade range, the add-ons each brand is known for, the lamp it pairs with and whether it offers a HEMA and TPO free line. This guide compares those practical points using what we stock and what each brand publishes, instead of ranking by opinion.
| Brand | What we stock | Best for | Lamp and cure note |
|---|---|---|---|
| OPI | Gel shades, Intelli-Gel, GelColor base, top and matte top | Techs who want a full brand system and a huge shade library | Steps on OPI's page use 30 seconds per layer under the OPI Star Light LED lamp |
| DND family | Duo polish (gel plus lacquer), base and top, DC, DND DIVA, a HEMA and TPO free line | Salons that want matching gel and lacquer, and a free-of option | DND sells its own UV/LED lamps |
| Kiara Sky | Specialty gels like Platinum FX Glitter Gel, Diamond FX Reflective Gel and GLOW Gel Liner, plus thinner and lamps | Art, glitter and reflective effects | Beyond Pro rechargeable LED lamps |
| Apres | Gel Couleur colors, Gel-X system, soft builder, HEMA and TPO free gels | Gel-X and sheer or specialty color systems | Apres Alpha 2in1 LED lamp |
| Pink Mask | Gel polish, cat eye, easy gel, builder gel, chrome, base and top, prep | One brand for the whole set, including cat eye and builder | Proluminance UV LED lamp |
Whichever brand you choose, the habits that decide wear are the same: clean prep, thin coats, capped edges and a lamp that matches. See why gel stays sticky if a new brand does not cure for you.
How to compare gel brands honestly
Marketing claims are cheap. These points are checkable on the bottle or the brand's own page:
- System fit. Does the brand sell a matched base, color and top? Mixing brands without checking compatibility is a common cause of home problems, according to NailKnowledge.
- Lamp match. NailKnowledge says gels respond to specific wavelengths. Look for a stated lamp type on the bottle or the brand's instructions.
- Cure time. Published times differ. OPI lists 30 seconds per layer under its LED lamp, and other brands list their own. Read them.
- Shade range and finishes. Cream, jelly, cat eye, glitter, chrome, reflective. Pick the brand that has the finish you use most.
- Free-of options. If you or your clients need lower-allergen gel, check for a clearly labeled HEMA and TPO free line.
- Availability. A brand you can restock easily is better than a perfect brand you cannot find.
We do not claim one brand outwears another, because wear depends on prep, thickness and lamp as much as on the bottle. What we can tell you is what each system includes and what to check.
OPI: the full system and the big shade library
OPI's own GelColor steps show how a complete system works: a bond step, a thin base, two very thin color coats and a thin top coat, each cured for 30 seconds under the OPI Star Light LED lamp, then a wipe of the tacky layer with N.A.S. 99. The page tells you to shake the color and shake the top coat for a full minute. It is a clean example of how a brand expects its gels to be used.
In our store, OPI is one of the biggest brands, with hundreds of gel shades and the Intelli-Gel line. GelColor base and top coats are in gel base and top coats, including a Stay Classic Base, a Stay Shiny Top and a Matte Top. The Star Light LED lamp is in Gel Lamps.
Choose OPI if: you want a deep shade library, a brand system you can follow to the letter and a lamp built for it.
Check: OPI's lines differ in what they contain. If you need a HEMA and TPO free gel, read the label of the specific product, because we do not list OPI as a free-of brand.
DND, DC and DND DIVA: duos and a free-of line
The DND family is built around matched pairs. A DND Duo Polish is a gel and a lacquer in the same shade, so a client can choose long wear or a quick change, and you only stock one color number. We keep these in duo sets (gel plus lacquer). DND also has a Gel 500 Base Coat and Gel 400 Top Coat, and DC and DND DIVA lines for more shades and finishes, including 9D Cat Eye.
The DND TPO HEMA FREE line is its own set of duo shades. It is a clear option if you need to offer HEMA and TPO free gels. Browse it in HEMA TPO free and DND TPO HEMA FREE. The Danish Consumer Council tested 70 gel polishes and found 15 with incorrect or incomplete ingredient lists, mostly from online sellers it named, so buy gels that are clearly labeled from sellers you can ask.
Choose DND if: you want gel and lacquer in matching shades, a wide color range and a free-of line.
Kiara Sky: effects and accessories
In our store, Kiara Sky is stocked mostly for specialty gels and tools. You will find Platinum FX Glitter Gel, Diamond FX Reflective Gel and GLOW Gel Liner shades, Gelly Tips, a Gel Polish Thinner and the Beyond Pro rechargeable LED lamps. Browse Kiara Sky.
That makes it a strong partner for art. Reflective and glitter gels are thick by nature, so use thin coats and cure each one. See how thin your coats should be. Kiara Sky's lamps are rechargeable, which helps if you work away from an outlet.
Choose Kiara Sky if: you build sets around effects, liners and glitter, and want a cordless lamp.
Check: our catalog does not list Kiara Sky as a HEMA and TPO free line. Check the label.
Apres: Gel-X plus Gel Couleur colors
Apres is best known for Gel-X, and our catalog has a large Gel-X selection. Its Gel Couleur colors come in several families: Gel Couleur, Astral, Sheer, Prismatic and Enigmatic. Apres also lists soft builder gel and Extend Gel Sensitive 2.0 as HEMA free, and a Soft Builder Gel marked HEMA TPO FREE.
Apres gives clear guidance on thickness. Its support page says a thick layer of Gel Couleur may impede proper curing, and poor curing can lead to shrinkage, wrinkling and a tacky layer, so use thinner layers. That fits our own advice in the wrinkling guide.
Choose Apres if: your menu is built around Gel-X, and you want colors and a lamp from the same brand. See Apres.
Pink Mask: a whole kit from one brand
Pink Mask covers a lot of the set in one catalog. We carry Pink Mask gel polish, pastel and crystal cat eye shades, Easy Gel, builder gel in a pot and in a bottle, chameleon and glow-in-the-dark gels, mirror chrome, base and top coats, a nail prep dehydrator and a Proluminance UV LED lamp. Browse Pink Mask.
That makes it simple to keep a matched system: prep, base, color, cat eye, top and lamp from one brand, so compatibility questions are fewer. For a cat eye set, see how to do cat eye gel nails.
Choose Pink Mask if: you want everything for a set under one label, including cat eye and builder.
Check: our catalog does not list Pink Mask as a HEMA and TPO free line. Check the label.

Pair your choice with a lamp the brand recommends. See LED vs UV nail lamps and how long to cure gel polish. If you can, visit one of our four stores and ask to see the bottles side by side.
A word on safety. The Danish Consumer Council quotes an allergy expert warning that a gel polish allergy can last a lifetime, and advises keeping gel off the skin and stopping if a reaction occurs. That advice applies to every brand above. If you get redness, swelling or itching around the nails, stop and see a doctor.
