Dip powder brands compared: OPI, NexGen, Kiara Sky, Chisel and more
An honest comparison of the dip and AIO powder brands we carry, what comes in each system, and how to choose without chasing a ranking.

There is no single best dip powder brand. OPI and NexGen are the dedicated dip lines we carry, while Chisel, Le Lilia, DND DIVA, Kiara Sky and NotPolish offer AIO powders. Choose a matched system of liquids, test on one nail, and pour powder instead of dipping into the jar.
How we compare these brands (and what we do not claim)
This is a guide to what each line is, what it comes with and what the maker says about it. It is not a ranking. Which brand performs best depends on your hands, your nails and your routine, and the right way to find out is to try a full system on a few sets. Where a claim comes from a maker, we say so. Where we only know what is on our shelves, we say that too.
What to compare:
- A matched system. Base, activator and top coat from the same brand. Mixing liquids is a common cause of lifting. See dip liquids explained.
- Dedicated dip powder or AIO. A dedicated dip powder is made for dip liquids only. An AIO powder is made to work as dip or acrylic. See AIO powders explained.
- Color range and jar size.
- Removal and wear claims from the maker, which are claims, not guarantees.
- Hygiene. Every brand, including the best, is only as clean as how the powder is poured. The AAD says to pour or sprinkle and discard what is left.

OPI Powder Perfection
OPI describes Powder Perfection as a three-liquid system: Base Coat, Activator and Top Coat, with color powders. Its professional pages say the system dries without a UV or LED lamp, and the product pages describe it as an odor-free acrylic alternative with a gel-like shine. The wear claim on OPI's site is 2+ weeks. Those are OPI's statements about its own system.
The line is labeled professional only, and OPI publishes step-by-step application pages, including a French application. Application uses a base coat and color powder dipped at about 45 degrees, repeated for three layers, then activator, filing with a 180 grit file and 100 and 220 grit buffers, a second activator and two top coat layers.
Why people pick it: a documented process from the brand, a large color range (we stock about 250 dip powders) and a three-bottle liquid set that is simple to keep track of. Watch for: it is built to be used with its own liquids.
NexGen
NexGen is the other dedicated dip line on our shelves, with about 224 products. It covers solid colors, whites (French White and Lite White) and Crystal Set in 2 oz and 4 oz jars, which suits techs who go through white or clear powder quickly. On the liquids side we stock NexGen's #1 Prep and #3 Activator. The numbering shows it works in numbered steps, so use the brand's own instructions for the full sequence.
Why people pick it: big white and clear jars, and a long color list. Watch for: confirm you have every liquid in the system before you begin; we list the ones that are on the shelf.
Chisel, Le Lilia, DND DIVA, Kiara Sky and NotPolish AIO
These are AIO lines. They are sold to be used as dip with dip liquids or as acrylic with monomer. Their appeal is range: Chisel, Le Lilia and DND DIVA together list hundreds of shades on our AIO shelf, and The Studio sells Fast Set All in One powders in clear and pink.
Kiara Sky is the one maker here whose published instructions we have checked in detail. Its blog says its All-in-One powders work for both dip and acrylic, with its EMA monomer for acrylic and with Dip Essentials (Bond, Base, Seal Protect and Top Coat) for dip. NotPolish AIO powders and NotPolish dip liquids (#3 Dip It Activator and #4 Mirror Shine Top Coat) are on the shelf as well.
Why people pick them: one jar for dip and acrylic, and lots of colors. Watch for: check the maker's instructions for which liquids go with each powder, and do not assume AIO means you can skip the activator when using dip.
What about DND and Apres?
People often search for these two with dip. We want to be straight about what we carry.
- DND is on our shelves for gel and lacquer duo polish, and DND DIVA is on the AIO shelf. We do not list a dedicated DND dip powder with its own matched dip liquids.
- Apres is in our catalog for gel systems such as Gel-X soft gel tips, soft builder gel and prep products. We do not carry an Apres dip powder. If you want a soft gel extension, see Gel-X.
If you are comparing dip with soft gel, read dip powder vs gel.
Liquids matter as much as powder
Most dip problems come from the liquids and the technique, not the color. A supplier troubleshooting guide traces cracking, lifting and gummy results to thin or thick layers, light or old activator, poor prep, uncapped edges and contamination. The Washington exam-prep guide says to use one manufacturer's products together, because mixing brands can cause an uncontrolled reaction and lifting.
Practically, that means choose the system, then the colors. If you start with a powder you like from a brand with no matched liquids on our shelf, pick a liquid set from one brand and keep it consistent. Our dip liquids cover OPI, NexGen, Kiara Sky, NotPolish, ANC and Triple Vitamin Dip, plus SNS Brush Saver Plus.
Checklist before you commit to a brand
- Can you get every liquid? Check that base, activator and top coat (and prep or bond if the system has one) are all available to you, not just the powder.
- Does the maker publish instructions? OPI and Kiara Sky both do. Use them rather than a generic video, since timing and numbering differ.
- Is the jar size right for your volume? White and clear go fastest in a French-heavy service, so a 4 oz jar saves reordering. Colors in 1.5 oz or 2 oz jars suit trying more shades.
- Is it labeled for your use? Professional only means salon use. Dip only means do not use with monomer. AIO means the maker says it can be used both ways.
- Test one nail. A product you have not used before gets the AAD's one-nail test: one nail, wait 7 days, then the full set.
- Plan storage. A supplier guide gives roughly a three-year shelf life for powder stored in a cool, dark place. Keep jars closed, and do not pour used powder back in. See lumpy dip fixes for what damp or clumped powder does.
If you are a salon buying for a team
Pick one system, not several. A single brand's liquids across every station reduces the chance of mixing, and it keeps troubleshooting simple: if lifting appears, you check prep and technique, not which brand someone used. Add a second line only for a specific reason, such as a wider color range through AIO. Stock plenty of small cups and trays so pouring is always the easy option. Our containers, jars and storage and disinfectants shelves cover the supplies that keep a dip station clean.
A simple way to choose
- Beginner or home user: one dedicated system, such as OPI powder with OPI liquids, so every step matches.
- Tech who wants the biggest color range: an AIO line plus a matched dip liquid set. Test on one nail before you build a service around it.
- Tech who does dip and acrylic: AIO with an EMA monomer, kept clearly separate from the dip liquids.
- Anyone: do the AAD's one-nail test with a new product, and pour powder into a cup instead of dipping into the jar.
New to the process? The dip powder guide shows every step. If a set fails, why dip powder chips and lifts will help you find the cause before you blame the brand.
